How to improve performance of WINE apps?

I’ve been using WINE recently to use some apps not supported on Linux and I can’t find a decent alternative for.

The performance is quite sluggish, though. Apps open quite slowly and aren’t very responsive. Is this a known caveat of WINE or could there be something else at play here?

I’m using Zorin OS 16.
